The bridge was built in 1345, conceived by Taddeo Gaddi, a pupil of Giotto.
The shops were occupied by butchers, forgers and tanners until the end of the XVI th century when they were replaced by jewellers.
A corridor was built in the XVI th century over the shops, it was intended for the Medici family to enable them to move without mixing with people.
